Deskundigen ontrafelen geheim van mythisch Noorderlicht
Wetenschappers hebben de geheimen van het legendarische Noorderlicht ontdekt. Dat meldt de Britse krant de Telegraph.
Een van de grootste natuurlijke spektakels op de wereld wordt veroorzaakt door elektrisch geladen tornado’s van enorme wolken zonnedeeltjes op 40.000 kilometer hoogte die met meer dan een miljoen kilometer per uur ronddraaien.
De krant schrijft: “Astronomers have long known that the lights are created when streams of particles from the sun – known as solar winds – come into contact with the Earth's magnetic field.”

Microben in zoutmeer onder 400 meter poolijs produceren de bloeddrap
Een gemeenschap van microben leeft onder een vierhonderd meter dikke ijslaag en produceert daar een enerverende bloedrode drab die door het ijs naar buiten komt. Deze ‘blood falls’ vormden sinds de ontdekking in 1911 een mysterie voor wetenschappers.

Mount Redoubt, or Redoubt Volcano, is an active and currently erupting stratovolcano in the largely volcanic Aleutian Rang of the U.S. state of Alaska.
It is located in the Chigmit Mountains (a subrange of the Aleutians), west of Cook Inlet, in the Kenai Peninsula Borough about 180 km (110 miles) southwest of Anchorage. The Alaska Volcano Observatory currently rates Redoubt as Aviation Alert Level Red and Volcano Alert Level Warning.
Mount Redoubt rises 9,000 feet (2,700 m) above the surrounding valleys to the north, south, and southeast in little over 5 miles (8 km); it is also the third highest within the range, with nearby Mount Torbert, at 11,413 feet, being the highest in the range and Mount Spurr at 11,070 feet being the second highest.

Volgens de NASA is dit jaar begonnen met nog minder zonnevlekken dan vorig jaar. De ruimtevaartorganisatie vergelijkt het met de beurs: “Juist als men denkt dat de bodem is bereikt, wordt het nog lager.” Men moet teruggaan tot 1913 voor zo weinig zonnevlekken.
